This is a space where I will use a cultural studies framework to evaluate what is going on in politics and society today. The title of the substack is based on three different meanings of Breaking Culture:

• Breaking Culture like Breaking News, looking at the recent headlines, cultural productions and conversations…
• Breaking Culture as in breaking down what these mean, in an accessible way, but using some theories and ideas I’ve learned and developed over my time as an academic and…
• Breaking Culture as in we are ideally doing all of this with an eye to breaking the archaic, residual, and emergent culture of fascism and reaction, and working towards a more just, equitable, democratic, and joyful world.

At the moment, my main interests are in challenging the dominant narratives about transgender care and the Department of Homeland Security’s assault on Chicago. But I am also generally interested in thinking about the way that media and culture interpellate us as raced, gendered, sexed subjects and how this process is being used to inure us to the fascist political takeover funded by some of the wealthiest individuals and organizations in human history. I intend to use my background as a media and cultural studies scholar and professor to unpack these processes – and hope this analysis proves important and useful to you.
